Dr. Martha Ferrito
Practice Director
Welcome to my website. Take some time to familiarise yourself with how I work and my values.
Trauma-Informed and Compassionate Approach
My approach in training, supervising, and consulting is rooted in creating a "safe holding environment” (Winnicott, 1965). The wellbeing of the supervisee is important to me. I take time to understand how the supervisee works and ensure I listen not only to the presentation of the cases but also to how the supervisee is managing their caseload. I emphasize the need to establish trust, create boundaries, and support the supervisee's autonomy and choice. Promoting healing is crucial, and I use a strengths and empowerment-focused perspective to foster resilience within supervision sessions.
Relational Approach
“We are evolutionarily hard-wired to heal and be healed by human connection and social interaction" Elkins (2016, p 51).
I draw from my clinical experience and understand that clients do not want someone who is disengaged and distant. I help the supervisee build a relational connection by being truly present, attuned, and helping the client feel listened to. Establishing the supervisor-supervisee relationship is based on principles similar to those in the therapeutic relationship. Every individual is unique, and I take the time to get to know you and understand what you need from supervision.
Nurturing Supervision Style
As a supervisor, I bring warmth, empathy, and a nurturing approach to my role. I am dedicated to fostering a supportive and collaborative environment where supervisees feel secure, respected, and encouraged to grow both professionally and personally. My style is decidedly non-critical. I focus on open communication, providing constructive feedback, and sharing my extensive knowledge and experience. My goal is to help you develop your skills, confidence, and professional identity. I am committed to continuous learning and professional development, ensuring that my supervisees are well-equipped with the latest therapeutic techniques and best practices.
EMDR and Integrative Models
While I am well-versed in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), my primary focus and passion lie in Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR). As a consultant EMDR Practitioner in training, I incorporate EMDR extensively in my supervision and clinical practice. I also integrate elements of other therapeutic models, such as Internal Family Systems (IFS) and third-wave therapies, to provide comprehensive and tailored support to each client. I consider each individual as a whole and use techniques that meet their unique needs and circumstances, responding to the client at affective, behavioral, cognitive, and physiological levels.
Openness to Feedback
I strive to achieve a culture of feedback and encourage active participation. Learning and growth are important to me, and I aim to supervise, train, and consult in the best possible way. I attend regular CPDs and have monthly supervision of supervision. I believe that developing psychological skills and knowledge enables clinicians to be responsive to clients. Sharing knowledge can have a ripple effect, positively impacting many lives.
